Vote for Dallas as Person to Watch! On the website Broadwayworld.com, they have an open nomination system for their regional awards, which means anyone can nominate themselves or anyone else for an award. The voting process is open as well and allows for the public to vote for their favorites of the year. Since the voting is all done online, it basically turns into a popularity and self promotion contest! That being said, a contest is a contest and any award looks good on a resume, so let the games begin!!!
This year, I was nominated in four categories, Best Leading Actor in a Play (for Tom in The Glass Menagerie At the 6th St Playhouse), Best Featured Actor in a Play (for Tom in The Glass Menagerie at the 6th St Playhouse), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (for The Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors at Narrow Way Stage Company) and Person to Watch in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is easy to realize how little these nominations mean when I am in 2 categories for the same role (and that happens a lot), but it's still nice to know that theatre professionals around the Bay Area are seeing my name. Hopefully they are taking notice and will be on the lookout for me in the future.
Chalkboard Players are producing shows for kids! I don't want to sound like I'm being cynical about these awards either. Even though they may not be an accurate representation of who merited the honor, it is a great opportunity for the whole theatre community to promote themselves. It is also a stroke of genius for the people at Broadwayworld to drive traffic to their site during the last quarter of the year. It is also a way to acquaint yourself a little bit with what is going on around the area. I was especially interested to see that there were only 5 theatre companies in the "Best Production performed for Youth" category. It's interesting to see what kind of trends there are in local theatre over the last year.
So, take a few minutes to vote for your favorites in each category or none at all if you don't know any of the work in that category. It's a great way to feel like a part of the theatre community!
